How To
Avoid Getting
Ripped
Off: Don’t Buy EDTV!
•
Enhanced
Definition TV (EDTV) is an obsolete standard of sharpness
(resolution) used in older Plasma and LCD TVs . . . it’s a
few years old, so of course it’s
obsolete!
•
With less
than half the sharpness of High Definition (HDTV), EDTV is
unacceptable by today’s standards, especially since nearly
every manufacturer has moved on to HDTV.
•
Unfortunately there
are shameless TV salesmen around with outdated or low end EDTV
Plasmas on their hands. Some of them would love to tell you that
“EDTV is just as good as HDTV” to clear out some old
inventory. They’ll even give you a good price . . .
•
There’s no
excuse for buying a Plasma or LCD with EDTV unless you don’t
know any better. Luckily, you’ve found the
123
Guide To
Plasma TV . . . in less than a minute, you’re gonna know
better!
Only A
Sucker Would
Buy An
EDTV Plasma!
•
EDTV (Enhanced
Definition TV) has 480p resolution, that means it uses 480
horizontal lines to make the image on the screen (for a full
explanation, see Plasma Screen Resolution). This is less than half
as sharp as a HDTV Plasma showing 1080p, or 1080 lines of
resolution! Both systems use a Progressive
imaging
system, meaning all 480 or 1080 lines are displayed each frame
(progressive is the “p” in
1080p).
•
SDTV (Standard
Definition TV) is the regular TV and cable most of us have been
watching for years. SD also has 480 lines in it’s image, but
the image is displayed very differently. Half of the image (240 of
the 480 lines) is flashed on the screen each frame, all the odd
numbered lines, then all the even.
•
Displaying every other line 60
times a second is called an Interlaced
picture;
in this case SDTV with 480i (interlaced) resolution is half as
sharp as EDTV with 480p (progressive).
•
The Sharpness (resolution)
of these three screen technologies is clear to
see:
SDTV
= 240
lines
per frame
EDTV = 480
lines
per frame
HDTV = 1080
lines
per frame
•
A Frame is
displayed on your TV screen 60 times a second. You can see that
HDTV is twice as sharp as EDTV, and four times as sharp as the TV
you grew up watching!
• Now You Know! You
Have No Excuse for
buying a Plasma TV which only features EDTV resolution. EDTV is
being phased out; almost every Plasma TV manufactured today is
capable of showing a HDTV image . . . make sure that’s what
you buy!
