How
To Pick
The Right
Plasma
TV Screen Size
• “Let’s
see now . . . my boss got a 60-inch, Marv down the street has a 42.
Mary said she wants a 50-inch . . . “
•
Picking
the right sized Plasma TV screen for your needs can’t be
boiled down to a simple formula. There are many things to consider
besides how jealous the neighbors will be.
•
How
large is the space where the TV will be installed? Is there room
around the TV for ventilation and stereo speakers? How much do you
want to spend? How far away will the viewers be sitting?
•
Will
your home theater system still fit in the room? Would you have more
space if you install a wall mount or a TV stand? Do you want to go
with Discount Plasma
or
High End
Plasma?
Only
You Can Decide:
How
Big Is Big?
• Measure the space in the
room where the TV will be and subtract one foot from the resulting
measurement for the frame and ventilation space. This will give you
a rough idea of the largest sized Plasma TV that will fit in the
space.
• How high on the wall should your Plasma TV be
mounted? A flat
wall mount should be slightly above the viewer's eye level. The
bottom of the screen should be no more than one foot higher than
the eye level of a seated adult. A tilt mount can be installed much
higher than that, over fireplaces and even on bedroom
ceilings.
• Plasma TV screens are
measured diagonally like all TV screens are. The most popular
screen sizes are 42-inch and
50-inch, although
you can get many sizes between 32-inch and
108-inch.
• A careful shopper can find a name brand
42-inch HDTV Plasma for around $1,000, and a 50-inch
for
about $2,000. You can spend much more, but the price of Plasma TVs
has dropped significantly in recent months.
•
A wall mount takes up much less space than a TV stand.
Plasma
TVs are less than 4 inches thick, a flat wall mount adds 2 inches
and a tilt mount 4-6 inches.
•
TV stand sizes vary
with the style and make, just remember to figure in about 18 inches
in depth and plan on a minimum length of 6-inches longer than the
base of the television.
•
How much viewing space is in
the room? Comfortable viewing distance for smaller Plasma TVs is 6
to 10 feet; the largest plasmas can be easily viewed from 6 to 20
feet.
•
Measure the space needed
for all the accessories your Plasma will require; TV stand (or wall
mount) , home entertainment system with speakers, digital cable box
and HDTV-DVD player.
• Last, but not least, how
jealous will the Jones be when they see your new 50-inch
Plasma?

Guide
To Plasma TV
• •
Pick
the correct size Plasma screen by measuring the room to see if the
TV, mount or stand and video equipment will fit, and that there is
plenty of viewing space. Plasma screens come in many sizes, the
most popular being 42-inch and
50-inch. In the
end, only you can decide what size Plasma TV you want to purchase
for your family. Whatever your choice . . .
