How To
Get A Smooth
Delivery
Of Your New Plasma
•
When
you bought your last TV, you pulled the it out of the trunk of your
car, plopped it on a stand, plugged it in and hooked up the cable .
. . good to go!
• I hate
to be the one who brings this up, but delivering a Plasma TV is a
bit more complicated than that.
• You
need to know how to carry the boxed TV when it’s delivered,
how to plan for the set up and how to install your new
Plasma TV.
Ten
Tips For A Smooth
Plasma
TV Delivery
• Plasma TVs are huge! Some
Plasmas are five feet wide and three feet high! It should be way
too big to fit in your back seat or trunk; don’t attempt to
transport it yourself unless you have a truck and several helpers.
Transport it upright and secure it.
• You’ll need to arrange delivery by the
retailer. Some
will deliver to your curb, some to your living room and some will
install the flat screen for you (for an additional fee: about
$200).
•
If you have to carry the TV, lift
it from the BOTTOM ONLY, not the sides. Sometimes the packaging can
fail and your expensive Plasma TV will drop through the bottom of
the box! You and a helper should always transport, carry, store and
install a Plasma TV in an upright
position.
• Please don't lay the TV on it’s front!
. . .
even if the instructions tell you to. I've seen
instructions telling the owner to place the TV on it's screen to
install the table stand! A Plasma screen has two thin sheets of
glass sandwiching the Plasma elements. Just one crack, and your
television is ruined beyond repair.
• You’ll need to measure the area where
the TV will be installed. Although the screen is only four inches
thick and space saving, put some thought into where you want it to
go. How high is my TV Stand? Will children be able to touch the
screen? Will light from the window reflect on my flat screen? How
high should my Wall Mount be? Where will my outlets and cable box
be? Plan it out carefully; it can be both complex and expensive to
move a wall mount once it’s
installed.
• Plasma TVs are heavy! A 50
inch Plasma TV can weigh 160 lbs. You’ll need at least two
people to mount one of these things; three would be better. These
units, cannot (and should not) be lifted by one person.
• Plasma televisions require a proper stand.
The
easiest and cheapest installation is to place the Plasma TV on a
stand. Most Plasmas come with a Table
Stand, but
at least two people are required to carefully remove the packaging
and lift the TV onto it. A few screws will secure the base, then
two people can lift the TV onto the stand (without touching the
screen). The stand should be wider than the base of the TV (40 - 50
inches total) and capable of supporting 200 lbs. A well built stand
should cost between $50 and $1450.
• Plasma TVs are often mounted on the wall.
If you decide on a Wall
Mount,
you’ll need a flat or tilt wall mount ($100 to $4850). Tilt
mounts are often used when mounting the Plasma higher on the wall,
flat mounts are installed closer to the viewer’s eye level.
You’ll also need cables long enough to reach your outlet,
home theater system, cable box or DVD player from the mounted
position.
• You may not want to install the wall mount yourself,
unless
you’re a professional carpenter or a master home handyman.
The mount has to hold 150 lbs. of expensive television. If the
mount fails, ONCE, your Plasma TV screen can drop and crack, and IT
CANNOT BE REPAIRED! Do you have a stud finder? Do you know what a
stud is? Do you know how to route cables inside your walls? It may
be best to hire a professional to handle installation
of
your wall mount (about $200).
•
Plasma televisions can be damaged if you're not careful.
Plasma
TVs should not be dropped. The screen should not be touched. Please
don’t let children touch or play with the plasma screen. You
shouldn't lay a plasma TV on it’s face. Plasmas must be
lifted carefully by the edges or the bottom. Any of these things
can crack the glass screen, ruining your new television. See our
section on Care and Cleaning
of
Plasma screens.
